Electrical Muscle Stimulation in Las Cruces

Electrical muscle stimulation (you may hear us refer to it as e-stim or just stim) is used to reduce pain and muscle spasm, and to promote healing. Electrodes are placed on the body in various places to target affected muscle and nerve fibers. Safe levels of electrical current are used to stimulate specific nerves that sense motion instead of nerves that sense pain.

These motion-sensing nerves are bigger nerve fibers and can therefore transmit signals to the brain faster than the thinner, slower pain-sensing fibers. The brain can only concentrate on one signal, and it chooses the one that gets there first—motion, not pain! In this way, e-stim can help to decrease pain and inflammation in the area of application.

Our Approach

At Smith Wellness, we incorporate e-stim as part of a patient’s overall care plan when appropriate. For example, we may use this therapy on the lower back after you receive your chiropractic adjustment or other therapies. Combined with ice packs, this can be a great adjunct to help relieve your pain right away.

We offer a variety of methods, which we can use to help patients with a variety of soft tissue problems. These include:

  • Russian stimulation – This is a high-frequency form of e-stim that is used to help improve the contraction of your muscles. It is excellent for easing muscle spasms and eliminating some types of headaches. Dr. Smith uses a specific headache protocol that offers great relief for many patients.
  • Interferential current – This form of e-stim alternates two different frequencies of current to help muscles relax and to increase blood flow to the affected area. We use this method for pain and inflammatory conditions.
  • Ultrasound – This modality uses sound waves rather than electric current to improve blood flow and circulation. We often use it in conjunction with e-stim, particularly for sprain/strain injuries.
